One of the most important elements of the tanning booth or used tanning bed performance is the type of lamps it uses. What really makes the difference in your bronzing results is selecting the right brand or combination of several lamp types for the appropriate unit. If you are considering purchasing a home tanning system, beware than you will get what you pay for as price often dictates performance, especially when it comes to the lamps.
Lamp Design – Horizontal Or Vertical Usage
Many times a lamp that is designed for use in a horizontal unit is often incorrectly used in a vertical unit. When horizontal bulbs or lamps are placed in a vertical position, the majority of the power is lost due to lamp temperature. Instead, look for a lamp or brand that is specifically designed only for vertical systems which will produce far better results.
Reflective Tanning Booth Lamps
The UV rays emitted from the regular bulbs in a new or used tanning bed emits light in all different directions. This creates an uneven tan, longer treatment times, and generally overall poor results.
Reflective bulbs eliminate this problem. They have a reflective coating right inside the lamp that helps to focus all the rays forward, directly toward the skin. You body receives up to 50% more rays that produces that a deeper golden color with shorter sessions.
Twenty Versus Ten Minute Sessions?
A tanning lamp is designed to provide a tan naturally, just like the sun. Most lamps require 20-30 minutes of tan time, depending on your natural skin color and type. But in a tanning booth, the tan time is generally much shorter than in a tanning bed. The tan time in a vertical unit is much quicker and may vary from just 5 -15 minutes; again, depending on skin color and base tan.
Lamp Quality And Performance
Often times, a lamp will not burn out before it is time to replace it. But it will eventually lose all of its power. This is why price and performance are important considerations; a low price or poor quality lamp may provide good results for the first 100 or 200 hours of use, but then it quickly loses power. A high quality lamp should last 800-1000 hours before it needs to be replaced.
Lamp Ballast Technology
Most tanners are not aware of the importance of the ballast system. Ballasts basically provide energy to the bulb or lamp. Electronic ballasts power a lamp more efficiently than any other type of ballast; and they extend the lamp life too. It also creates a much more comfortable experience compared to a choke or magnetic ballast that creates higher amount of heat and consumes up to 40% more electricity.
Use this guide when shopping for a used tanning bed or tanning booth, and consider these basics carefully when selecting the right lamps for your system.
